The most expensive seaside resorts in the UK

Sidmouth is the most expensive seaside resort in the UK, according to a survey by Cheaprooms.co.uk, which compared prices across 30 popular coastal destinations.

The results were compiled based on the average price for the cheapest available double room in a hotel or guest house during the month of August. Only properties located within walking distance of a beach and rated at least 3 stars were considered.

With an average rate of £132 per night, the town of Sidmouth in Devon leads the rankings. St Ives in Cornwall and Oban on the west coast of Scotland came out second and third, with average rates of £118 and £107, respectively.

At the cheaper end of the scale, with an average rate of only £34 per night, the famous resort of Blackpool in the English county of Lancashire ranks as the most affordable UK destination. Other inexpensive places to stay include the Welsh resort city of Swansea (£56) and Eastbourne (£54) on England's southeast coast.

Overall, average hotel rates at UK seaside resorts dropped by about 15%, compared to three years ago when the same survey was conducted. For example, significantly more affordable now are Scarborough (-22%), Brighton (-14%) and Shanklin (-25%). However, a handful of resorts, such as llandudno (+23%) and Sidmouth (+18%), have seen their hotel rates rise over that time.

The following table compares 30 seaside resorts in the UK. The prices shown reflect the average daily rate for each destination's cheapest available double room in a hotel or guest house rated at least 3 stars, for the period spanning 1-31 August 2019.
