Hotel Rates in France for Rugby World Cup 2023

September 7, 2023

A survey by Cheaprooms.co.uk has analysed hotel rates during the Rugby World Cup in France, which is set to take place across nine different French cities from tomorrow (Friday 8th)

Specifically, for each scheduled group game the price guests would have to pay for the cheapest available double room in a hotel rated at least 3 stars and located in the city centre was recorded.

Among the survey’s findings, it was shown that England Lions rugby fans will have to pay at least £405 for a room in Marseille this Saturday for their opening tournament game against Argentina. That makes it the most expensive World Cup group game for accommodation and represents an increase of over 300% compared with regular hotel rates in Marseille.

Slightly more affordable is accommodation for the two Lions’ group games in Lille against Chile (£308) and Samoa (£288), while rooms are available for as little as £187 for England’s clash with Japan in Nice.

Elsewhere, Wales open their tournament on Sunday against Fiji in Bordeaux, and fans can find a room in the wine capital of France from £171. For the Dragons’ games against Portugal (Nice) and Australia (Lyon), rooms are currently available from £215 and £221, respectively, while the priciest Welsh game to attend is their last group fixture against Georgia in Nantes, where visitors will have to pay a minimum of £284 for a night’s stay.

Scottish rugby supporters, meanwhile, will have to spend £285 for the least expensive room in Marseille this Sunday, when their national team goes head to head with South Africa. Rates are much lower for the Scots’ games against Tonga (£144) and Romania (£205), and for their final group game against Ireland in Paris it’s possible to find a room from £189 in the centre of the French capital.

Overall, hotel rates in Paris look to have remained fairly moderate during the World Cup, with the city’s huge choice of hotels appearing to have absorbed the demand. Even for the two tournament semi-finals and the final itself, you can find rooms for around £200 per night in one of the central Parisian neighbourhoods, which is only about 50% more expensive compared with regular rates.

In the knockout stages, the two quarter-finals being played in Marseille are the priciest for accommodation, with minimum rates of £535 and £514, respectively, for the least expensive double room. For these games, certain hotels in the city centre have hiked their rates by an eye-popping 800-900%. If they were to progress that far, both England and Wales would play their quarter-final games in Marseille.

The following table shows the 10 most expensive group games for the Rugby World Cup 2023 based on the cost of lodging. The rates shown reflect the cost of the most affordable double room rated at least 3 stars, and located in the respective city centre.
