The most expensive New Year's Eve destinations in Europe

The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is the most expensive destination in Europe for overnight stays on New Year's Eve, according to a survey by Cheaprooms.co.uk.

The survey compared hotel rates across 40 European destinations for December 31, with prices at all hotels with a central location and rated three stars or more in each destination recorded.

In Edinburgh, travellers wanting to experience the city’s famous Hogmanay celebrations will have to spend at least £350 for the most affordable double room. Compared to a standard night in January, that’s an increase of about 280%.

Second most expensive is Venice with a minimum rate of £283 on December 31. In the romantic Italian lagoon city, visitors will have to spend 217% more than usual. The podium is completed by the UK capital of London, where prices start from £280 for a double room.

Also among the priciest destinations are Reykjavik (£247), Amsterdam (£238) and Vienna (£238), while Prague was shown to have the highest rate hike after Edinburgh, with an increase of almost 300% compared with usual January prices.

At the other end of the spectrum, Birmingham in the UK is the third most affordable destination, with rooms available from just £82 on December 31. By some distance the least expensive city in which to spend New Year's Eve is the Greek capital of Athens, where you can find a room from around £50 in the city centre.

The Rates shown alongside each destination reflect the price for the cheapest available double room on 31 December in a centrally located hotel rated at least 3 stars. The relative increases compared with regular January prices are shown in brackets.
