The Most expensive city destinations in Europe

August 29, 2017

The Danish capital of Copenhagen is the most expensive European city this year based on the cost of accommodation, according to a new survey by Cheaprooms.co.uk, which compared hotel rates across 40 popular city destinations.

For the purposes of the survey, rates were compared across the month of September – typically the most expensive time of year for travelling in Europe. Only hotels with a central location and rated three stars or more were included in the survey.

Copenhagen is already known as an expensive city, and its position at the top of these latest rankings will come as little surprise, with an average rate of €189 euros per night for the cheapest available double room.

The runners up are Amsterdam and Munich, with average price of €175 and €173 euros, respectively. Munich’s appearance in the top three comes as no surprise, given the Bavarian capital hosts its annual Oktoberfest event in the middle of September, comfortably doubling hotel prices in the city.

Meanwhile the cheapest city according to the survey is the Turkish capital Istanbul, where you’ll probably be able to find a room for around €30 euros per night. Also relatively cheap are Athens, Budapest and Moscow, where the survey found average rates of €56, €59 and €64 euros, respectively.

The table below compares 40 city destinations in Europe. The rates displayed reflect the average price for each destination's cheapest available double room (minimum 3 star hotel) from 1 – 30 September 2017.
