York: Waterloo – The Best of Abba

|

The show looks back at the sensational careers of Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid, who swept to fame in the 1970s with their Eurovision winning ‘Waterloo’. Four decades later, the song and the band remain as popular as ever.

The band’s distinctive sound is replicated with a remarkable attention to detail by a full live cast and band, complete with stunning costumes and breath-taking choreography. Meanwhile the lyrics penned by Benny and Bjorn are sung in captivating harmony from the opening refrain to the final sing-along chorus of this two-hour spectacular.

Abba disbanded in 1982, but the group’s music later enjoyed a fresh burst of popularity through films such as Muriel’s Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

In 1999 the hits of the Swedish superstars were developed into a stage show, Mamma Mia, that later spawned a blockbuster movie.

Abba has sold more than 380million albums and singles worldwide – and counting – making them the second best-selling music group of all time, after The Beatles.

They were honoured at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005, when smash-hit “Waterloo” was chosen as the best song in the competition’s history.

Waterloo – The Best of Abba takes place at York Barbican on 12th November. Tickets are priced at £22.40 (£20 concessions).
