As one of England’s most popular short-break destinations, York is suitably packed with places to rest your head after a long day of sightseeing – and we’ve reviewed one of them below.

What’s the location like?
Nestled beside the River Ouse, and just a five-minute walk from York station the hotel makes an excellent base for sightseeing. The Shambles, Clifford’s Tower and York Minster are all within easy reach on foot, and the riverside setting adds a peaceful touch.
How would you describe the style and character?
Traditional. While the exterior hints at its Edwardian roots, the interiors are simple and functional rather than design-led. There’s a real charm to the hotel, although some areas – particularly the corridors and lift – feel a little dated.
What services and facilities are on offer?
There’s a 24-hour reception, free Wi-Fi throughout, and a small amount of on-site parking (pre-booking recommended). Guests can relax in the small lounge bar or on the riverside balcony.
What about the guest rooms?
Spacious and tidy, with a focus on comfort over flash or fancy. Rooms come with tea/coffee makers, en suite bathrooms and flatscreen TVs. Some offer river views, which are worth requesting. A few furnishings are starting to show their age, but everything’s spotlessly clean.
How’s the food and drink?
Breakfast is generous, with both buffet and plated options depending on the day. You’ll find all the usual cooked items alongside cereals and pastries. There’s also a bar menu for snacks and light evening meals.
Is it value for money?
Yes, especially given the central location and roomy accommodation. It may not win awards for style or amenities, but it’s is definitely a reliable choice in the heart of York – so long as you’re not expecting the polish of a boutique hotel.
