Big hair, lycra and power ballads defined the 1980s music scene and the ‘Let’s Rock festival in Bristol gives misty-eyed revellers the chance to relive those halcyon days once more. A great time is guaranteed at this family-friendly celebration of one of the most cherished music eras of all time.
Taking place in the grounds of the Ashton Court mansion estate, situated a 15-minute drive west of Bristol City Centre, the three-day event has grown in scale since its inception in 2009 and now boasts a line-up of over thirty bands and solo performers.
Much-loved names including Billy Ocean, The Boomtown Rats, Rick Astley, Sister Sledge, Jimmy Somerville, Chas & Dave, Hot Chocolate, Aswad, Bucks Fizz, Sam Fox and Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers will be delivering a melodic trip down memory lane, playing live songs that still resonate as strongly as ever.
With the festival proving popular with young parents who grew up in the ‘80s, organisers have thoughtfully made ‘Let’s Rock Bristol’ a family-friendly event, with a vast range of amenities on offer for little ones, including children’s entertainers, a circus, face painting, fun fair with water rides and dodgems, an ‘80s-themed play area and a wide choice of food stalls. Fancy dress is the wardrobe choice for many visitors, giving kids and adults alike an excuse to dress up as their favourite musician, or superhero, or anyone they wish.
But the chance to get involved does not stop there. Those brave enough will also get the opportunity to blast out their own versions of classic ‘80s tunes thanks to the festival’s Megamix Karaoke. Whether it’s a reggae number by Aswad or a pop rock favourite by Chas & Dave, visitors can indulge their exhibitionist streak in front of a crowd of like-minded music lovers.
This year also sees the introduction of the festival’s inaugural VIP enclosure, where party-goers can gain access to exclusive ‘80s-themed offerings, including hair and nail makeover stylists, classic cocktails and chill-out zones. Other amenities available to those who purchase VIP tickets will include a premium food outlet, coffee shop and – perhaps most importantly of all – VIP luxury toilets.
Camping grounds are available for those who wish to sleep on-site, as well as a number of ‘glamping’ options from reputable companies including Eve’s Tipis, WOW Tents and Tangerine Fields, who will be on hand to rent out their own specialist high-end camping equipment.
Culinary options are truly international, with Indian, Mexican and Chinese just some of the offerings. Alternatively, for those who wish to bring their own food, picnics can be enjoyed in the main outdoor area. Alcohol is readily available – along with non-alcoholic drinks – from a host of vendors dotted throughout the venue.
Tickets for ‘Let’s Rock Bristol’ are available to buy from the Bristol Tourist Information Centre or through the festival’s official website. Gates open daily at 11am and the festival closes at 10.30pm.
