Survey

The most expensive summer destinations in Europe

September 4 , 2013
A new survey by Cheaprooms.co.uk has deemed Edinburgh the second most expensive summer destination in Europe. Lodging cost served as the basis for the rankings. In tabulating the results, the survey considered all important European destinations. It then made a comparison of their hotel rates during the main summer vacation month of August.

Visitors to Scotland paid an average of 157 Euros per night to stay in the capital city’s most affordable double room this August. That figure easily positioned Edinburgh in the survey’s number two spot. For comparative purposes, only such hotels rated 3 stars or higher were taken into consideration by the survey.

The only city to outrank Edinburgh, in fact, was the Baleraic island of Formentara. This small island six kilometers to the south of Ibiza snagged the first place slot. By averaging 175 Euros nightly, it handily beat out all other destinations as the summer’s priciest European locale.

The following table shows the 20 most expensive summer destinations in Europe. The prices shown reflect the average daily rate for each destination's cheapest available double room (minimum: 3-star hotel) for the time period spanning August 1st through the 31st.

About the Methodology

All European destinations having a minimum of 50 regular hotels were considered for the survey. For each location, the price for the cheapest available double room was established for each day in the month of August. Based on this data, an average price was calculated for each destination, resulting in the aforementioned rankings. Only such hotels rated 3 stars or higher and with a TripAdvisor rating of at least average were included in the survey. Moreover, only such hotels located in or less than one mile from the city center/beach were considered for the respective destinations. All prices were established between July 25th and July 30th via the hotel comparison website Kayak.
