Hotel Prices in Lisbon Soar in Response to Champions League Final
May 13, 2014
Madrid football fans who are hoping to cheer on their team in person at the upcoming UEFA Champions League final in Lisbon better prepare themselves for some hotel sticker shock. Hotel rates in the Portuguese capital have soared in response to the Saturday, May 24 game day. Out-of-towners wishing to spend the night can expect to pay in excess of 1000% more than they typically would, according to a new survey from Cheaprooms.co.uk.
The survey specifically found that fewer than one in 20 of all Lisbon hotels are currently offering vacancies over May 23–25 weekend. The limited few that still have available rooms are jacking up rates, on average, 768% compared to normal in response to the demand. Indeed, the Champions League final is prompting some Lisbon establishments to raise their hotels rates substantially more than that even.
For the most affordable room in Lisbon, football fans will currently have to spend 400 Euros per night (so 800 Euros in total for the full CL final weekend). For this price they will receive a double room with a shared bathroom in a low-budget hotel. If they are looking for a hotel room only for the day of the final, the cheapest available double room will cost them 650 Euros.
The following table shows the 10 hotels in Lisbon with the biggest rate increases for the weekend of the UEFA Champions League final. CL prices reflect nightly rates for May 23–25. Regular prices reflect rates for the same room two weeks later (June 6–8, 2014). All hotel rates were established on May 12 via the leading hotel booking sites.
